Canon VIXIA HF10 Highlights

Canon VIXIA HF10 Highlights

AVCHD Flash Memory in a Compact Size The VIXIA HF10 is one of Canon's first AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) format Flash Memory camcorders. AVCHD uses an MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video codec, recording true 1080 High Definition resolution video. An advantage of the AVCHD format is that it captures twice as much video using less storage, which enhances the extended recording time possible with Flash Memory, up to 6 hours 5 minutes in LP mode with the internal memory.

The advantages of Flash Memory go beyond the added recording time. You'll also appreciate the quick response time, because it doesn't have to wait for moving parts. Press the record button and your VIXIA HF10 starts recording video faster than you've ever seen before. In addition, when you review your footage, it will come up more quickly as well.

Another plus is the VIXIA HF10's lower power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. It's just what you need so you don't miss that pivotal play on the field or the moment when they say "I do".

While we certainly hope you keep your VIXIA HF10 securely in your hand while shooting, if it happens to slip, or you accidentally knock it against something, you'll be happy to know that Flash Memory makes your camcorder more shock resistant than other recording storage systems. It also minimizes the chance of data loss due to damage to your recording media or the moving parts in other camcorders.

Making this new technology even more convenient to use is the VIXIA HF10's compact size and light weight. Measuring only 2.9-inches wide, 2.5-inches high and 5.1-inches deep, it combines big video storage capacity in a small, easy to carry body.

Please note: 1920 x 1080 movie recording requires a Class 4 or higher memory card. For other recording formats, a Class 2 or higher card is recommended. Also, movie recording requires cards with 128 MB of memory or more. Cards made by Toshiba, SanDisk or Matsushita are recommended. No particular restrictions apply for still images.

Canon VIXIA HF10 Highlights

Dual Flash Memory: 16GB internal Flash drive & SDHC card slot What makes the VIXIA HF10 stand out in the category of Flash Memory camcorders is its Dual Memory capability. You can capture video on both the camcorder's internal 16 GB Flash Memory as well as onto an SDHC Memory Card.

Video stored on the internal memory can also be copied onto the memory card which can then be inserted into your computer or HDTV's card reader slot for immediate viewing. It is also possible to transfer still images recorded to the SDHC card to the internal memory.

You can also use higher capacity memory cards to further increase the video storage of your VIXIA HF10.

3.3 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Sensor The VIXIA HF10 captures 1920x1080 High Definition video through its Canon designed and manufactured 1/3.2" 3.3 Megapixel Full HD CMOS image sensor, similar to the CMOS image sensors in Canon's EOS Series Digital SLR cameras.

Canon VIXIA HF10 Highlights

Compared to a CCD, the VIXIA HF10's CMOS's high color resolution and advanced color reproduction gives brilliant results. It is also unique in featuring Canon's proprietary noise reduction technologies for crisp, sharp images. Low noise technology also means that even in dimly lit scenes, the signal from each pixel is as pure as possible, with minimal noise or other aberrations. It's the ideal sensor for HD.

The VIXIA HF10 uses an RGB Primary Color Filter with Bayer Placement Pattern that separates light into red, green and blue color components. This results in vibrant images with deep, rich, accurate color and natural-looking tones similar to what you'd obtain from 3CCD camcorders. In addition, the Bayer Placement Pattern delivers sharp high definition images with true-to-life color reproduction. As an added benefit, the CMOS sensor provides outstanding image capture in low light conditions.

Full HD Lens-to-Screen (1920 x 1080 Capture and Recording) The Canon VIXIA HF10 not only captures images in Full HD, but records and outputs at 1920 x 1080 as well, so you get Full HD from lens to screen. Your memories are preserved in stunning clarity, and ready for playback on your HDTV.

Genuine Canon 12x HD Video Zoom Lens For over 70 years Canon has been producing exceptional photographic lenses that are synonymous with unsurpassed optical performance. Because of Genuine Canon Optics, every Canon broadcast lens, 35mm film camera, digital camera and camcorder assures brilliant optical quality -- and the VIXIA HF10 is no exception.

The VIXIA HF10 comes with an outstanding High Definition video lens -- a 12x HD Genuine Canon zoom. It's the lens you need to record long shots of your child on the soccer field, wide shots of beautiful landscapes, and everything in-between. And because it comes with four zoom speeds, three pre-set and one variable, you always get smooth, steady, professional looking zoom shots.

Super Spectra Coating technology results in images with minimal flare and ghosting. Plus, the new lens' aspheric design reduces aberration and increases resolution, ensuring crisp, sharp video and enhancing the HD image quality. Not only that, but a new gradation neutral density (ND) system gives you better exposures in bright shooting situations.

In addition, for those times when you need to get a particular shot from a very long distance, this flexible lens also has a 200x digital zoom.

DIGIC DV II Image Processor

The Canon DIGIC DV II Image Processor is the next generation of Canon's exclusive DIGIC DV signal processing technology. Designed specifically for HD, DIGIC DV II ensures optimal image quality. It also ensures optimal image quality for still images, even though video and still images have different color requirements. DIGIC DV II is just another one of Canon's advanced technologies that make the VIXIA HF10 an exceptional performer.

Thanks to Canon DIGIC DV II image processing, the VIXIA HF10 produces video with improved color reproduction -- especially in skin tones, and dark and light scenes. It also uses a hybrid noise reduction system that employs two types of noise reduction -- for high definition images that are crystal clear.

Plus, the Canon DIGIC DV II Image Processor features improved continuous shooting of digital photographs with the VIXIA HF10. You can shoot five (3.1 Megapixel) still images per second, and enjoy faster processing of your images to your memory card (1.4x normal card; 2.5x Hi Speed card). It also helps lower power consumption for longer battery life.

Canon VIXIA HF10 Highlights
Shoot five still images per second

SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization The high-resolution images of High Definition video demand a steady hand. It's easier to get those clear, steady images with the VIXIA HF10, thanks to Canon's innovative SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization. It combines gyro- and image-sensors to give image stabilization through a wider range of camera motions. Some image stabilization systems correct one type of camera motion or vibration better than another. But Canon's SuperRange OIS corrects for a wide range of camcorder motion: the fast vibration you'd experience while recording from a moving car; the medium-speed motion of hand-held recording; and the slower motion of body sway. No matter what you're recording and how you're recording it, the VIXIA HF10's stabilization design corrects camcorder shake instantly. SuperRange OIS also delivers steady images when shooting at long focal lengths.

In addition, optical stabilization keeps your shot steady without a loss in image quality -- something that can't be said for electronic image stabilization. And image stabilization isn't just for video; you can even use it for taking sharper, clearer digital photographs with your VIXIA HF10. Thanks to Canon's expertise, it's easy to eliminate one of the telltale signs of amateur video and photography.

Instant AF (Auto Focus) Another critical objective when shooting in High Definition is achieving a very sharp focus. The VIXIA HF10 camcorder features Canon's revolutionary Instant AF focusing system which offers a dramatic improvement in auto focus speed and accuracy (compared to traditional auto focus systems). The Instant AF feature uses an external sensor, in combination with Canon's auto focus system, to help significantly decrease the time it takes to find focus, even in low light conditions. This system achieves focus instantaneously, reducing focus "hunting." The benefits of Instant AF are especially seen in high brightness and night shooting situations. With Instant AF, it's possible to capture fast, accurate focusing, even when following a moving subject.

Canon VIXIA HF10 Highlights
2.7-inch LCD display

2.7-inch Multi-Angle Vivid Wide screen LCD The 2.7-inch Multi-Angle Vivid Wide screen LCD on the VIXIA HF10 lets you see more of what your camcorder is recording. Using a hard coat Anti-Reflection surface and improved color reproduction, the scene in the viewfinder is a more accurate indication of what you're capturing in the camcorder. An added benefit of this Canon Exclusive is the wider range of viewing angle possible with this new LCD screen. With less glare and deeper contrasts, groups of people can gather around it and see the image displayed more clearly than ever before.

Superb Shooting Control

Variable Zoom Speed Control Another sure sign of amateur video is the unsteady zoom shot. But with the VIXIA HF10's zoom control, you simply select one of the four zoom speeds (three pre-set, one variable) for smooth, steady, professional looking zooms.

Level and Grid MarkersWith the Level Marker feature, it's easy to keep your camera level for more professional looking video. Line up any horizontal lines in your shot -- such as the horizon -- to the marker and you can be sure your camcorder is level.

The VIXIA HF10's Grid Marker feature lets you compose your shot accurately, according to the grid in your viewfinder. You can even choose from two different colors for the grid. This ensures that you see the grid, no matter what the background color of your shot is.

Program AE Mode For the best exposure for various situations, the VIXIA HF10's Program AE mode will automatically adjust the settings to compensate for the conditions and subject. Choose from Portrait, Sports, Night, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Spotlight and Fireworks. You won't have to guess if you're capturing all the action just the way you want it, the VIXIA HF10 will do it for you.

Canon VIXIA HF10 Highlights
Change settings to compensate for conditions, such as night or snow

Low Light Performance Some of the most magical shots are taken at the end of the day or long after the sun has set. You won't miss any of them, thanks to the VIXIA HF10's mini video light. The light lets you shoot subjects in color in low light up to 4.9 feet away. So, whether it's a shot of a sleeping baby, or a dramatic skyline at night, the VIXIA HF10 captures all the moments you want to record.

Manual Audio Level Control To make your videos sound as good as they look, the VIXIA HF10 offers a built-in audio meter and manual audio level adjustment. You'll be able to tell at a glance if the sound you're hearing is being recorded the way you want it and a simple control allows you to change the audio level if it's not.

DVD Burner Compatible You can also easily burn DVDs of the video shot with your VIXIA HF10 as it is compatible with Canon's new DW-100 DVD Burner. A one cable connection is all it takes to send the files across and with the click of a few buttons, your videos will be burned to an AVCHD disc for play in a compatible DVD player.

24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring movie makers to achieve a professional "film-look." You can change the camcorder's frame capture rate to 24p (recorded at 60i), which provides the appearance of the same frame rate as movie film. In addition, you can use the VIXIA HF10's CINEMA setting, which changes the color and tonal characteristics, evoking the look and feel of a movie shown in a theater. For added flexibility, these settings can be used together or independently.

30p Progressive Mode This is a unique feature that only Canon offers in the consumer camcorder market. You would otherwise have to look to professional video cameras in order to have this sophisticated tool at your command. In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, you may choose to set the VIXIA HV30 to capture video in 30p which is (30 progressive frames) particularly useful for footage to be used on the Internet. In addition, this setting gives enhanced quality to still images captured after recording. Excellent for action shots and sports.

Panasonic SDR-H40 40GB Hard Drive Camcorder with 42x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Panasonic SDR-H40 40GB Hard Drive Camcorder with 42x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

From the Manufacturer

Perfect for capturing your most important memories, the SDR-H40 boasts Panasonic's Advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization), which detects and corrects hand-shake approximately 4,000 times per second, which is about eight times more effective than Panasonic??s previous systems. The SDR-H40 also offers 42x optical zoom so you can always get a great shot, even from a distance.

Record to either SD (or SDHC) memory cards or to the built-in 40 GB HDD, which features enough storage space for up to 36 hours of footage. The SDR-H40 also feature an Anti-Shock Shield that helps protect the built-in hard disk from external impact, making it suitable for rugged conditions.

Panasonic SDR-H40 Highlights

Panasonic SDR-H40 Highlights

Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. is a new image stabilizing function that achieves around eight times higher precision than our previous system. The system uses gyro-sensors to detect hand-shake, then shifts a lens and adjusts its optical axis to compensate. And while our previous system checked and compensated for hand-shake around 500 times per second, the new Advanced O.I.S. works around 4,000 times per second. Advanced O.I.S. enables finer, more effective hand-shake compensation. Also, because the system is optical, no image quality is lost. With Advanced O.I.S., you'll capture images that are clear, sharp and beautiful on a big TV screen.

This 42x zoom can fill the screen with even a distant subject. This lens is not only the powerful zoom offered in a home-use digital camcorder, it also features low distortion. And because it's optical, there is no quality loss - you get the images in all their natural beauty.

The Pure Color Engine converts the CCD output signal from a complementary color signal into an RGB signal at an early stage and extracts the low-frequency luminance component from the RGB signal. This innovative engine also achieves truly superb color reproduction for high-zoomed pictures.

This model offers the High-Picture-Quality Wide Mode, which produces images that make for beautiful, dramatic viewing on a wide-screen TV. The image is processed on 16:9 area of the CCD. Because the image decoded has the same proportions as your wide-screen TV, there is virtually no picture quality degradation. You get beautiful images and all the excitement and dynamism on either a wide 16:9 screen TV or a conventional 4:3 TV. This model also features a wide 2.7-inch LCD, making it easier to frame shots when you're shooting in 16:9 mode. You can enjoy shooting wide, and viewing wide.

Panasonic's MPEG2 engine is a wide-range, high-precision search engine that produces smooth, beautiful motion pictures. Because it precisely records the differences in each frame, it can render fast, complex motions - like those of athletes in the thick of the action - with exceptional precision. The MPEG2 engine also uses Variable Bit Rate technology that Panasonic developed for the high-end DIGA DVD recorder. Giving LP recordings nearly twice the resolution captured with previous Panasonic camcorders, this lets the camcorder record clear, smoothly flowing pictures.

Holding as much data as 28 DVD discs, the internal hard drive lets you record continuously for up to 36 hours without changing a disc, memory card or other recording media.

Anti-Shock Shield: Protects recorded video data from damage due to jolts and impact:

Panasonic SDR-H40 Highlights
About the Anti-shock shield

One-touch copying onto a DVD Connect the camera to a USB port on your PC, and you can copy your video data onto a 12-cm DVD disc by pressing a single button. You don't have to do anything to the PC. Likewise, connect the camera to a DVD burner and pressing one button is all it takes to copy data to a DVD disc.

Power LCD Plus You can set the LCD to any of five brightness levels for optimal viewing in a variety of lighting conditions. When shooting outdoors on a sunny day, make the LCD brighter. When shooting indoors, lower it. This not only makes the LCD easier to see, it's also easier on your eyes.

This unit records in VBR. VBR is an abbreviation for Variable Bit Rate. VBR recording automatically varies the bit rate (amount of data in a fixed time) depending on the subject being recorded. This means if a subject with sharp movements is recorded, the recording time is reduced.

Panasonic SDR-H40 Highlights

One touch navigation joystick The joystick makes the camera much easier to use, letting you control all basic operations with one hand. As you shoot, just watch the image in the monitor and follow the instruction guide. You can handle a number of operations quickly and easily, without even taking your eye off the subject.

Help mode Not sure what a certain icon means? Just switch on the Help mode and select the icon. It's explained for you on the LCD monitor. This makes it easier to learn the icons, and you spend less time reading the operating manual.

Quick search and access with Disk Navigator Unlike videotape, you don't need to rewind or fast-forward to search for specific scenes. The camcorder LCD screen displays a list of the recorded scenes for quick and easy searching.

Edit with Disk Navigator You can do some polished editing using just the camera itself. For example, you can delete scenes right on the spot or change the scene sequence to create your own scenarios.

  • Playlist Edit: It's easy to change the sequence of the scenes you've recorded, and then play them back.
  • Dividing and Deleting: This function makes it easy to delete the scenes you don't want and to save the ones you do. You can also split up motion pictures and delete only parts of them.

Easy On / Off reduces the time required for operating the camera. When you open the LCD, the power turns on. Shut it and the power turns off.

This Quick Start mode helps shoot videos on the spur of the moment. This mode lets you shoot those not-to-be-missed scenes by turning on the power just 2.1 sec. from the time the LCD is opened.

Color Night View gives you smoothly flowing pictures even in dark places, where it's normally difficult to capture good shots.

Connect the H40 directly to a DVD burner via a USB cable. You can then copy recordings from the SDHC/SD Memory Card or hard disk to a DVD disc by simply pressing a button. The disc you make can be played on DVD players, so playback is easy too.

Panasonic SDR-H40 Highlights

USB 2.0 compatibility lets you upload a motion picture data to a PC at high speed over a single USB cable.

VideoCam Suite editing software is just the tool you need to make polished, smartly finished productions. It lets you load images into your PC for putting scenes in a different order and delete the ones you don't want with simple operation. When you're finished with your video production, you can use VideoCam Suite to reserve the edited version onto a DVD disc.

JVC GY-HD200U High Definition 3-CCD MiniDV Professional Camcorder with 16x ProHD Fujinon Lens

JVC GY-HD200U High Definition 3-CCD MiniDV Professional Camcorder with 16x ProHD Fujinon Lens

Designed for news gathering, field production and digital cinematography, the GY-HD200 offers full-frame 720p/60 imaging and real 24p recording capability. Its high resolution and smooth motion make it perfect for ENG and recording sports events, while its HD progressive 24 frames per second record rate lends itself to cinematic productions, giving them a very natural and film-like appearance. So whatever your HD requirements may be, this ProHD camcorder from JVC provides an affordable HD solution which can meet your needs today and tomorrow.

JVC GY-HD200U Highlights

HDV and DV compatible As the HDV format uses the same recording track pitch as Professional DV, the GY-HD200 can record signals in either standard (576i/60) or high (720p/60) definition, according to the user??s needs.

Real 24p camcorder The GY-HD200 also offers real HD 24p recording capability--previously available on only the most expensive HD cameras. Ideal for DVD production, HD progressive 24-frame-per-second recording makes it possible to shoot images with film-like quality and smooth motion. Once recorded, those images can easily be transferred without frame rate conversion to 16 mm or 35 mm film with full HD fidelity. ProHD??s outstanding image quality is supported by a wide range of powerful features which have great appeal to true film professionals. These include the image inverse function, as required by certain film lens adapters, and a menu to select the appropriate combination of color matrix and film gamma type. Cinema Gamma is deployed to assist in making video look like film, and Film Out gamma can be used when the video is to be ultimately transferred to film. This choice of gamma means that the cinematographer, irrespective of whether the final production will be presented as film or as video, can be sure of always getting the best possible image.

JVC GY-HD200U Highlights

3-CCD camera system with 720p HD CCDs The GY-HD200 uses three 1/3-inch, high-definition CCD image sensors. Each array has a full square pixel resolution of 1280 x 720 and uses a micro lens system. Since this native resolution matches that of most HDTV displays, the need for image scaling is eliminated, further enhancing the quality of the recorded images. Another advantage of using these CCDs is their sophisticated circuitry which virtually eliminates both lag and image burn.

JVC GY-HD200U Highlights

Interchangeable HD lenses The GY-HD200 features a standard professional 1/3-inch bayonet lens mount, providing the opportunity to use a variety of other professional HD lenses. In addition to the standard 16x Fujinon lens supplied, a number of other 1/3-inch bayonet mount zoom lenses are available. Canon offers a powerful 20x5mm zoom lens and Fujinon similarly an 18x4.2mm, besides a very wide 13x3.5mm lens and 17x5mm lens. Furthermore, lens mount adapters ACM-12 and ACM-17 convert the mount to 1/2-inch and 2/3-inch bayonet mount respectively, providing cost savings by way of using existing 1/2-inch and 2/3-inch lenses. Also, to enable the use of film camera lenses, specialist film lens adapters are available.

Uncompressed 720p/60 live output via component When required, the GY-HD200 can output a live uncompressed 720p/60 signal in the form of analog component signal, making it an excellent choice as a video server feed.

Uncompressed 1080i/60 output via component One very important reason why JVC developed the progressive form of HDV was the ease and speed with which a progressive signal can be converted to other formats, irrespective of whether the conversion is up, cross or down. Conversion is always performed in real time because the time-consuming complexity of de-interlacing is not required.

Professional Functions

Compact shoulder mount JVC??s ProHD camcorders are the first fully professional HD camcorders to feature a compact design and shoulder mount. Like its predecessors, the GY-HD200 offers excellent mobility and enhanced usability, while its flexible range of ergonomic adjustments ensures that any camera operator, regardless of stature or physique, can support the camcorder steadily and, above all, comfortably.

JVC GY-HD200U Highlights
Flexible ergonomic adjustments

Professional functions and switch layout In addition to the Full Auto Shooting to handle difficult or variable lighting environments, the GY-HD200 is equipped with an array of functions that give professionals creative flexibility. These include, zebra, gain, white balance and full shutter control. Also, the GY-HD200??s switches have been positioned where professional camera operators expect them to be. Shooting is intuitive, precise, easy, and error-free, because the learning process is minimized dramatically, making the GY-HD200 the ideal camera for any assignment.

Detachable 230,000-pixel LCD color viewfinder The viewfinder??s eyepiece can be moved backwards and forwards and can also be adjusted laterally for left or right eye shooting, so the viewfinder can fit any operator comfortably. JVC??s own developed proprietary and patented Focus Assist control ensures fast and easy focusing. It has 3 settings, (high, medium & low) depending on the type of subject in view. To make focusing even easier, a black and white mode is available. Stronger contrast and reduced color noise make visualization and composition easier in this mode and put less strain on the eyes, which allows longer periods of shooting. The eyepiece viewfinder can be used at same time as the LCD display. If it is not required, the eyepiece viewfinder may be detached.

3.5-inch LCD display panel This 250,000-pixel, 3.5-inch color TFT LCD monitor provides a high-resolution image during shooting and playback. JVC??s own developed Focus Assist control ensures fast and easy focusing. A push button selects three display modes:
1. Video only
2. Video images with text information overlay including time, status, mode and other data are shown on the screen.
3. Only information such as time, status, mode, time code, audio levels and other data is shown on the screen.

Various audio-related functions When color bars are output, an audio reference level (test tone) can also be output if required. This is requested via the menu. The audio reference level can be set at -12 dB or -20 dB as required. To minimize extraneous noise picked up by the microphone, a "wind cut" function is provided.

Versatility and Flexibility

Camera settings recorded on SD card Customized settings can be stored on a standard SD memory card and loaded into another GY-HD200 or changed on site, as required.

IEEE 1394 (FireWire) in/out A convenient IEEE 1394 interface allows easy direct connection to NLE systems or to a PC for capturing, editing and archiving.

User-friendly Design

Universal ergonomic design The camcorder adapts to fit any shape of body comfortably because of the shoulder pad that can be moved back & forth, the left or right eye viewfinder that can also adjust back & forth, and the padded audio monitor that slides up & down.

Patented "Focus Assist" function A JVC patented device, Focus Assist, turns focusing into a fast, easy and accurate process. When Focus Assist is activated, the picture in the viewfinder becomes monochrome and all objects which are in focus take on a colored fringe. In addition to the factory default Middle position, Low and High positions are available. In the Low position, you can limit the area in focus for more precise focusing. This is particularly helpful when using the technique of pulling focus. Focus Assist works equally in the 0.44-inch viewfinder and the 3.5-inch LCD panel. There are two Focus Assist buttons, one for each of handheld and shoulder operation.

Sony Professional DSR-PD170 3 CCD MiniDV Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom

Sony Professional DSR-PD170 3 CCD MiniDV Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom

Product Description
The DSR-PD170 is a high quality video camera well suited to a broad range of applications -- from event videography to training videos to filmmaking. It's small size and long battery life make it ideal for use in the field, and its broad array of manual override features make it a very adaptable camera for all sorts of shooting environments.

DSRPD170 audio inputs
Two XLR audio inputs allow you to connect pro mics or external audio.

3CCD camera system
Originally, camcorders used one CCD--the imaging device that turns light into electronic information--and let the image processing unit decider the color information from the data. Like today's broadcast video cameras, however, the DSR-PD170 uses a prism to divide incoming light into three beams and uses specially tuned 1/3-inch CCDs to create red, blue, and green composite images, which are assembled into a final image. The result is a more film-like vibrancy and more accurate color representation. Advanced HAD technology reduces fixed pattern noise and the vertical smear sometimes associated with CCD images.

Audio
The DSR-PD170 records two channels of PCM digital sound with the 48 kHz/16-bit or 32 kHz/12-bit mode. It features a ECM-NV1 electret condenser microphone, as well as two XLR audio input connectors for use with professional-grade microphones or external audio sources.

DSRPD170 zoom start stop
A zoom lever and a rec start/stop button are built into the handle.

12x optical zoom lens
The DSR-PD170 is equipped with a 12x zoom lens. Zoom comes in handy when you can't get close enough to your subject for proper framing, such as a sporting event or nature photography. The camera also has digital zoom feature selectable for 24x or 48x. Users should note, however, that digital zoom comes at the expense of picture quality, since it is achieved by discarding part of the information from the frame.

In order to facilitate zoom control and recording operation during low-angle shooting, an additional zoom lever and a rec start/stop button have been added to the carrying handle. Furthermore, the supplied wireless Remote Commander unit can be used for external control.

To protect your investment, the DSR-PD170 comes with a lens hood with a built-in lens cap, which will keep your glass from getting dirty or scratched. The hood can be opened or closed by using a lever on the side of the hood, so it will never get lost. Also, it comes with a wide conversion lens, which is ideal for shooting indoors or in small spaces.

DSRPD170 zoom start stop
The kit includes a wide
converter lens and hood.

Optical Super SteadyShot system
Sony's optical Super SteadyShot System helps remove the slight hand jitter and vibration that is often the bane of video production. Sensors inside the camera detect horizontal and vertical movements and the camera can counteract those movements by adjusting the lens mechanism on the fly. This is superior to digital anti-shake systems that counteract image shake by trimming off edges of the frame.

Large precision black & white viewfinder and LCD monitor
View your subject through the built-in viewfinder, the swing-out LCD display, or both. The camera features a 0.44-inch type black & white LCD viewfinder and a 2.5-inch color LCD monitor. You'll save battery time by using just one, but you may want to use one for adjusting focus and the other for monitoring audio levels.

Index marking and title function
When using a Cassette Memory-equipped DVCAM/DV tape, an index can be marked while recording with the DSR-PD170 or recording from an external video source, which makes for quick access later on. Also, you can store titles in the cassette memory for overlay during playback.

Manufacturer Description
JVC's ProHD opens up the world of HD digital cinematography with the introduction of the GY-HD110U. True high-definition recording on inexpensive and reliable tape, or optionally onto hard disk, and real 24-frame progressive capture give this camera performance characteristics found only in high-end cinematography cameras.

JVC GY-HD110U Highlights

JVC GY-HD110U HD MiniDV camcorder
Switch between color and black and white with the selectable display mode

Professional form factor One look at the GY-HD110U reveals the obvious: this is not a 'prosumer' camcorder, nor is it a derivative of a consumer model. Controls and switches are laid out in the same manner as on higher end production cameras. Because of extensive customization capabilities there are menus, but critical performance controls are right at your fingertips where you expect them. Deep inside the GY-HD110U is a truly advanced progressive camera that sets a new benchmark in the industry.

Film-like 24-frame progressive capture and recording 24 frames per second progressive acquisition produces recorded images that have a more polished, film-like appearance than typical interlaced video cameras. That's why virtually all high end digital cinematography cameras utilize the 24P system. The GY-HD110U uses three newly developed 1/3-inch native high definition CCDs that produce a more refined HD look without scaling. Since the native 24 frame material is recorded to tape, it is possible to transfer the recordings to film without frame rate conversion. Time code is recorded in the 24P mode, so recordings made with the GY-HD110U can be edited with film based and high end digital systems with ease.

Bayonet mount interchangeable lenses The GY-HD110U includes a standard detachable 16x Servo Fujinon ProHD lens. Operation is the same as with all professional lenses, with mechanical control of focus, zoom and iris functions. The built-in servo zoom and iris functions can also be used if desired. Other available lens options include a 13x (3.5mm) wide zoom HD lens, a wide-angle converter for the standard 16x lens, an adapter allowing ??-inch lenses to be used on the camera and a filter kit. JVC offers rear tripod mounted focus and zoom controls for the standard lenses. Prime lenses can also be used with a 3rd party adapter.

Extensive user adjustable parameters Creating a true cinematographic look involves more than just recording at 24 frames per second. The camera's gamma, detail and black levels can be adjusted to the user's preference. When combined with the correct lens filters and lighting techniques, film like performance can be obtained that's tailored to the mood of the scene. There is even a skin tone detection feature that automatically reduces the amount of enhancement in facial areas so that your subjects will not have a wrinkled, television-like appearance. All custom settings can be stored on an inexpensive SD memory card and transferred to another camera if desired.

Superior signal processing JVC's advanced DSP and 12-bit A/D conversion gives the GY-HD110U the characteristics of a high end production camera. Depending on the mood, black levels can be compressed or stretched.

Focus assist function People viewing high definition pictures are often able to see focusing errors that would normally go unnoticed in standard definition. Therefore, it is important to precisely focus every scene. For this reason, JVC has developed and patented a 'focus assist' function that highlights detail in the viewfinder to facilitate HD focusing.

Progressive scanning The GY-HD110U utilizes a progressive scanning system similar to that used in all high end digital cinema cameras. Progressive scanning systems capture and store full frames of information and can be easily converted to interlace signals if desired. When progressive recordings are frozen or played in slow motion, individual frames contain the full detail--excellent for viewing and analyzing motion. Prints that are made from HD progressive frame grabs look far better than typical frame grabs. What's more, all flat panel television displays and fixed matrix projectors, such as D-ILA, DLP and LCD, are native progressive scanning systems and eliminate the need for conversion when displaying GY-HD110U progressive recordings.

Advanced encoding system from the leader in MPEG-2 technology JVC is one of the original developers of the MPEG-2 compression system. MPEG-2 is an 'interframe' encoding system that combines multiple frames of digital picture data into a group of pictures (GOP). It then removes redundant informaton from the GOP resulting in far greater efficiency than with 'intraframe' systems, such as DV, that compress every frame separately. JVC pioneered high definition MPEG-2 recording with its D-VHS format--used by major motion picture studios for screening and playback of dailies. JVC's advanced MPEG-2 codecs are used by major television networks and satellite providers. In the GY-HD110U JVC has utilized a highly efficient MPEG-2 codec that compresses the full HD resolution without the 'downsizing the image' used by some competitors.

Reliable dual media recording capability The GY-HD110U adheres to the HDV format adopted by JVC and other manufacturers. Compressed MPEG-2 data is recorded on widely available MiniDV cassettes. Since tape speed is identical to DV, a 63 minute DV cassette will yield 63 minutes of high definition recording. Furthermore, critical image data is interleaved over the entire 6 frame GOP (corresponding to 60 tracks on the tape) giving the HDV format great robustness with respect to dropouts. In addition to recording on reliable, inexpensive tape, the GY-HD110U can simultaneously record directly to an optional hard disk module, the DR-HD100. In addition to providing an instantaneous back-up recording, recordings made on the hard disk can be accessed directly by popular non-linear editing systems eliminating the need for file transfer. This Direct To Edit feature (DTE) provides producers with a take-away tape copy while providing editors with the ability to begin editing immediately.

2 XLR audio inputs Professional XLR connectors are provided for each audio channel. The GY-HD110U records CD quality audio at 384Kbps in the MPEG1 Layer 2 format. Independent input level controls are provided for each channel. Audio level indicators are visible in the viewfinder and on the flip-out LCD display.

The adjustable shoulder mount allows for enhanced mobility and comfort

Compact shoulder mount The first fully professional HD camcorder to feature a shoulder-type mount with a compact body, the GY-HD110U offers excellent mobility and enhanced usability. The exclusive shoulder-type mount assures ease of handling for anyone, regardless of physical strength. The shoulder pad and earphone position can be moved to fit to the cameraperson's head for a more stable shooting position.

Smooth Motion Function (patented) JVC's exclusive smooth motion function captures images at double the normal rate when shooting in 30p or 25p (that is, at 60p or 50p). When the doubled images are merged, they are passed through a newly developed filter that smoothes out the subject's motion by retaining a small percentage of residual image. This eliminates the motion judder that typically appear in images shot at 30p or 25p.
